Dumplings Over Mochi

Dumplings Over Mochi

餅より団子

This work playfully depicts a rabbit enjoying a moon-viewing scene, presented as a parody inspired by the proverb “Hana yori dango” (“dumplings over flowers”), which means valuing substance over appearance or practicality over elegance.

In this interpretation, the rabbit prefers sweet dumplings filled with red bean paste over the traditional tsukimi mochi, whose flavor is more plain—adding a humorous twist. The word mochi is also a pun on mochizuki (望月), another term for the full moon, reinforcing the idea of choosing dumplings over moon-viewing itself. The kimono is decorated with autumn grasses and flowers, enhancing the seasonal atmosphere.

Artist

Ippu Waji

和地 一風

Born in Tokyo in 1970, he worked as a company employee before beginning to create netsuke in 1996. Drawn to small and vulnerable beings, he chose the art name “Ippū” in pursuit of a distinctive and unconventional style. His works often feature imaginary creatures such as yōkai; by imagining what they might eat and how they would behave if they truly existed, he brings a sense of realism into the world of fantasy.
