Burari

Roasted Chestnut

Roasted Chestnut

焼きぐり

Chestnuts, one of the iconic flavors of autumn, have been cultivated in Japan since the Jōmon period, making them a deeply familiar ingredient in Japanese food culture. They are associated with autumn, as well as symbols of wealth, prosperity, and longevity. Dried chestnuts, known as kachiguri, are linked to the word “kachi” (victory) and were favored by samurai during the Sengoku period. The expression “to pull chestnuts from the fire,” which originates from an Aesop’s fable, is used in Japan to convey the value of self-sacrifice—taking risks for the sake of others.

Artist

Akira Kuroiwa

黒岩 明

Born in Tokyo in 1949, the artist initially worked as a jewelry designer before beginning netsuke carving in 1992. Coming to netsuke from outside the traditional family-based apprenticeship system of ivory carving, they approached the art form with a free and independent perspective. By incorporating metalworking and lacquer techniques into netsuke sculpture, the artist established a distinctive style. They also experimented with new materials, bringing a rich sense of ornamentation and contemporary expression to the world of netsuke.
